What is a brake retarder?

A brake retarder, also known as an engine brake or exhaust brake, is a device installed on a vehicle's engine that helps slow down the vehicle by reducing the engine's power output.

There are three main types of brake retarders: compression release, exhaust brake, and hydrodynamic retarder.

Compression release retarders work by opening the exhaust valves on the engine during the compression stroke, releasing the compressed air and reducing the engine's power output.

Exhaust brake retarders work by restricting the flow of exhaust gases, creating back pressure in the engine which slows down the vehicle.

Hydrodynamic retarders, also known as water retarders, use a fluid-filled chamber to create resistance and slow down the vehicle.

Brake retarders are commonly used on heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses to help control speed on downhill slopes and reduce wear on the vehicle's brakes. They can also improve overall safety by providing additional braking power in emergency situations.
